Snoods - Footballs latest fashion accessory

As the cold weather continues to batter the shores of England, the usual long -sleeved shirts and gloves have made their yearly appearance up and down the leagues. Yet, one item has proved as controversial as it is, apparently, comfortable. This item is called a snood and it is beginning to make more and more appearances in football as the temperatures hover around the zero mark. Snoods are becoming more and more popular as the winter rumbles on with the likes of Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli, Martin Petrov and Samir Nasri all sporting the winter accessory.

Not all those associated with football are fans of the snood, however as the debate rumbles on as to whether or not they are appropriate for the modern game. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is in favour of the items on advice from his medical team stating they prevent injury thus the likes of Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh among those in favour of the snood. Moving further up north, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Everton manager David Moyes have both been heavily critical of the item that is causing mixed reactions in the football world. Sticking with Manchester United, SAF started his war of words ahead of their home 1-0 victory over Arsenal on the 13th of December. Ferguson, when questioned about the winter accessory, claimed that "Real men don't wear snoods" with Manchester United and England Captain, and serial twitter abuser, Rio Ferdinand tweeting "U won’t see a Man Utd player wearing a snood" adding fuel to the fire ahead of the December 13th fixture.

Moving on further but sticking in Manchester, we look to David Moyes post-match comments as he voices his opinion on the snood. Moyes banned his players from even thinking about sporting a snood in their 2-1 victory over Manchester City on the 20th of December. Without a snood in sight (courtesy of Everton kitman Jimmy Martin) on a cold Monday night in Manchester saw a determined (and probably freezing) Everton side pick up a moral boosting three points against title contenders Manchester City destroying their chances of going into Christmas top of the Premiership. The fixture, in my opinion, was summed up brilliantly by Henry Winter of The Telegraph - This was snoods against short sleeves.

So, with mixed reaction to the snoods in football, I can't see them leaving the scene in too much of a hurry especially with the mercury in every thermometer struggling to hit anything above five degrees. Clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester City are clear favourites of neck-piece whilst Everton and Manchester United aren't fans of the latest item. Personally, I am not a big fan of the snoods no matter how low the temperature plummets. Fair enough, long sleeve shirts and gloves may be acceptable as the winter rumbles on but snoods are adding to the image that football has become a 'softer' sport once more.

Well, that is my take on the increase of snoods in football. I will write once more in the future.
